SOLOMON GRUNDY
Everything I do is about telling stories through my designs and I was able to do that in an illustration I did around the poem Solomon Grundy. I was to illustrate the story through metaphors. I accomplished this by developing something that I knew that I could tell the story without the typographic elements accompanying it. When coming up with my metaphoric imagery I started by researching in depth the short poem to find that it was used primarily to teach Catholic children the seven sacraments. I centered my design around this research and designed each panel of my design as miniature stained glass windows, just like someone might find in a church or cathedral. Metaphorically, I represented Solomon Grundy as a plant and specifically shaped my designs to draw back to the story. As the story grows dim so does the mood and my colors, which I did intentionally. The green at the opening shows the birth and red shows Solomon Grundy’s death. Each image also contains a gestalt element to further the story. My final prints were printed glossy to represent the shiny glass of the windows and really brought out my design.
